Barton Community College is offering a Horse Science course from 11:30-12:50 on Mondays and Wednesdays starting Jan. 11 through May 12 in the Math and Science Building room S137. The deadline to sign up is Jan. 6.
The 3-credit-hour course is being offered independently, but is also given as part of Barton’s Beef Cattle Production program. Course Objectives include understanding the following: History and development of the horse and the horse industry, anatomy and function, reproduction, nutrition, health management practices in regards to diseases and unsoundness, common husbandry and management practices and components of horse behavior, training and equitation.
Instructor Maggie Tracy said the course is well-rounded to be beneficial to horse enthusiasts of all levels of interest and involvement with the species.
“Students that take this course, whether they are in Beef Cattle Production or not, are given the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the horse,” she said. “This information can be used as a precursor for Veterinary Medicine, to enhance the performance of their horse or just simply provide a better life for their equine companion.”
The course is lecture based, but will include field trips to provide students with hands on learning opportunities.
