The Barton Community College campus at Fort Riley signed up with the Junior League of the Flint Hills for their annual holiday Adopt-A-Family program. Barton was given a family of five children ranging in age from 19 months to 17-years-old. Each child had a wish list of things they would like to receive for Christmas.
Administrative Assistant to the Dean at Fort Riley Arlette Stratton said she was very pleased with the participation.

Barton Community College’s Center for Adult Education will soon be starting its nine-week GED Preparation Class.
The orientation session, which is a prerequisite for the course, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Jan. 11-15 at 1025 Main St. in Great Bend. Those interested can call ahead or arrive on the first day of orientation.
Regular coursework begins on Jan. 19 and is offered from 9 a.m.–noon Monday, Tuesday and Thursday or in the evenings from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Barton Community College offices will close for holiday break Monday, Dec. 21. All offices will reopen Monday, Jan. 4. Spring semester classes will begin Monday, Jan. 11.

Barton Community College will help area high school seniors figure out what they want to do with their futures at Senior Day, starting at 2 p.m. Feb. 6, with a sign-up deadline of Feb. 1. Sign up at seniorday.bartonccc.edu.

Every day is a new chance to turn it all around. Ellinwood resident James “Jimmy” Kinsey is living proof. After many years of battling drug addiction and being in and out of prison, he is finally headed toward a better life by pursuing a welding career through Barton Community College.
Kinsey dropped out of high school in 10th grade and spent most of his adult life addicted to drugs, and he knew it was time to do something about the path his life was on.

Barton Community College’s Shafer Art Gallery will host a juried art show titled “Exposure Time 3” in January and is encouraging photographers to enter. Awards of $100 will be given to winners in three categories and there one $200 “Juror’s Award.” There is no entry fee. A total of three works can be submitted. The deadline to enter is Jan. 8.

In conjunction with the Shafer Gallery’s “Holiday Open House,” the Barton Planetarium will show a holiday and winter-inspired full-dome movie every hour from 1-3:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6.
The movie will begin at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. and there will be live light shows in between each showing starting at 1:40 and 2:40.

Area residents are invited to kick up their heels at the Barton Community College Jingle Bell Swing big-band dance from 8–10:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5 at the Great Bend American Legion, 1011 Kansas Ave. The evening will feature a live 16-piece big band and the Hilltop Singers will also provide a special presentation during the evening.
