The Office of Science / US Department of Energy is pleased to announce paid research appointment opportunities for fulltime faculty from areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) during the Summer of 2027. Internship opportunities for STEM undergraduate or graduate students from the visiting faculty member’s institution, made at the visiting faculty member’s option, is available through an invitation process. The application system for the 2027 Summer Term Visiting Faculty Program (VFP) program is currently open, with all applications due by 05:00 PM Eastern Time on January 06, 2027.
The Visiting Faculty Program (VFP) goal is to increase the research competitiveness of faculty members and students at institutions of higher education historically underrepresented in the research community in order to expand the workforce that addresses DOE mission areas. Through direct collaboration with research staff at DOE host laboratories, VFP appointments provide an opportunity for faculty and their students to develop skills applicable to programs at their home institutions; this helps increase the STEM workforce in DOE science mission areas at institutions historically under-represented within the DOE enterprise. Appointments are for 10 weeks during the Summer term, are open to US Citizens and US Lawful Permanent Residents, include a weekly stipend, reimbursement for one round trip domestic travel to the participant’s host DOE laboratory, and possibilities for a housing allowance. More than 75 faculty appointments, and 50 student internships, are sponsored annually.

More than 100 internships are sponsored annually.

QUALIFICATIONS:
● Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting, carrying, bending, and standing for extended periods in a production or agricultural environment.
● Basic mechanical aptitude and comfort using hand tools, power tools, and simple machinery with appropriate training.
● Strong focus on workplace safety, including following safety protocols and using personal protective equipment as required.
● Reliable, punctual, and able to follow verbal and written instructions from supervisors and team leads.
● Effective teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to work respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
● Willingness to work in varying environmental conditions (e.g., heat, cold, dust) typical of industrial and agricultural settings.
