Barton History Instructor Linda McCaffery will present a course focusing on WWII and the Cold War from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 27 through March 31 in the Fine Arts building, Room F-30.
When WWI ended on November 11, 1918, American General John J. Pershing predicted the next war in Europe would begin within 20 years. Unfortunately, he was correct. A mere 21 years after the end of WWI, WWII began with the German invasion of Poland. Three years later, the United States entered the conflict, fighting in both Europe and Asia. To understand why WWII in Europe is an extension of WWI and what caused Japan to attack American and British installations in 1941, one has to examine the past, as neither event happened in isolation. This class will explore the historic background that resulted in one of world history’s most tragic periods. In addition to the historic background of WWII, the events, aftermath and roots of the Cold War will be discussed.
