April 4, 2022 Update

  • Monday, April 4 – Cavanaugh Room in the Learning Resource Center (LRC), 5-6 p.m. Open Support Group: Support Groups offer the opportunity for friends and acquaintances of Kai to gather in a therapeutic group format to discuss and support one another in their shared loss.

  • Wednesday, April 6 – Cavanaugh Room in the Learning Resource Center, 6-7:30 p.m. Community Connections: This come and go event serves as an opportunity for Faculty/Staff and Students to gather and spend valuable time engaging with one another in solidarity and social support. Crafts, coloring, puzzles, games, and refreshments will be provided. 

  • Wednesday, April 6 – A book will be placed on the top floor of the Union where friends and acquaintances of Kai are invited to write a note for Kai’s family. The book will remain in the Union for one week, after which it will be given to Kai’s parents. Also available with the book will be flowers representing the colors associated with suicide prevention awareness. Students and employees are encouraged to take a flower and place it at the foot of the commemorative cougar outside of the union in honor of suicide prevention and in remembrance of Kai.

  • Thursday, April 7 – Cavanaugh Room 10 a.m. - noon and Academic Development Center 1-3 p.m. in the Learning Resource Center, Keren the Comfort Dog

March 31, 2022 Update

Please note the following presentations:

  • Thursday, March 31 – Surviving Suicide Support Group/Suicide Prevention Task Force representative – Library, 2 p.m.
  • Friday, April 1 – Keren the Comfort Dog will visit the housing common areas from 2-4 p.m.
  • Saturday, April 2 – Pastor Mark Williams and Laura Williams available for faith-based support – Library, L-137 and L-116, 3-5 p.m.

March 29, 2022 Update

Please feel free to utilize any of these campus or community resources or opportunities for community support. 

  • An additional counselor is available for walk-in appointments in L-111 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesday, March 30 – Friday, April 1. This service will continue for as long as it is needed and being utilized.

  • Additional off-campus resources include

  • Wednesday, March 30 – Sunflower Commons in Housing, 6-7:30 pm – “Community Connections” will include board games, activities, light snacks and social support with instructors and other students

  • Friday, April 1 – Keren the Comfort Dog will visit the housing common areas from 2-4 p.m.

  • Academic Development Center in L-136 and Tutoring Lab in Library are always available as supportive locations to be among others – homework is not required to utilize these spaces.

March 28, 2022 Update

We want to make you aware that on Monday, the 28th of March, a student passed away in campus housing. Our hearts break for the students’ family, friends, and those on campus who knew him. Our crisis team is doing what we can to respond to this event and support those affected.   

We know that this will affect many of you and ask that you treat each other with the utmost care, kindness and sensitivity during this time. We also want you to know that Barton has mental health resources available to you and will add additional resources over the next two weeks. If you or someone you know is grieving, struggling with loss or with your mental health, or having thoughts of suicide, please reach out to our campus mental health counselor in the Learning Resource Center, L-139, at 620-791-9295 or counseling@bartonccc.edu. Or call our local 24/7 crisis line at (620) 792-2544, or the national mental health crisis line at 1-800-273-8255 or text 741741.

If you are having trouble managing emotions in response to this news, or other challenging circumstances in your life, we implore you to seek help. There is no shame in doing so. Our mental health requires just as much maintenance and care as our physical health, and assistance from a qualified professional is normal. 

We also want to remind you that you all are valued members of the Barton community. You are important and worthy just as you are, and we hope you find meaning and purpose in your journey with Barton.
