Announcement: Tragedy on campus and available resources for employees

Barton family,

We want to make you aware that on Monday, the 28th of March, a student passed away in campus housing.

Our hearts break for the students’ family, friends, and those on campus who knew him. Our crisis team is doing what we can to respond to this event and support those affected.

We know that this will affect many of you and ask that you treat each other with the utmost care, kindness and sensitivity during this time. We also want you to know that Barton has mental health resources available to you and will add additional resources over the next two weeks.

If you or someone you know is grieving, struggling with loss or with your mental health, or having thoughts of suicide, please reach out to our campus mental health counselor in the Learning Resource Center, L-139, at (620) 791-9295 or counseling@bartonccc.edu. Or call our local 24/7 crisis line at (620) 792-2544, or the national mental health crisis line at 1-800-273-8255 or text 741741.

If you are having trouble managing emotions in response to this news, or other challenging circumstances in your life, we implore you to seek help. There is no shame in doing so. Our mental health requires just as much maintenance and care as our physical health, and assistance from a qualified professional is normal.

We also want to remind everyone in the Barton family of your value. You are important and worthy just as you are. Collectively, we strive to make a real difference in the lives of our students and impact the communities we serve. Everyone’s contribution has a potent impact to that end. Everyone’s. While vocation is just one part of our life, we hope you find meaning and purpose in your efforts here at Barton.

Thank you for your time, and for being a valuable member of the Barton family.
