Instructor Information

My name is Todd Mobray. I will be your instructor for ARTS 1246 - Digital Photography I. I wanted to take this opportunity to share a little more about what we will be doing in this course this session and answer some common questions about what is required for the course.

Course Equipment

There is no specific camera or software required for the course. However, to get the most out of the course, it is suggested you use or get access to a DSLR, mirrorless, or Point-and-Shoot camera with manual controls.

You can complete the course and earn full credit using a phone camera. However, phone cameras do not have the same manual controls a DSLR does. Some lessons in the second half of the course revolve around learning and manipulating the manual controls. However, alternatives are available for simpler cameras. A cheap tripod is also suggested.

Class Participation Expectations 

Job Simulation: At the beginning of the course, you will be hired on as a photo intern at Digital Photography Magazine. Each week you will be promoted to a new role with more responsibilities and freedoms for creativity. By the end of the course, we will be producing a class issue of Digital Photography Magazine in which you will have a featured section with your favorite photos or shooting styles.

Shooting New Photos: You will be expected to shoot at least 5-10 new photographs shot that week for various shooting assignments. Please plan on actually taking new photos and not turning in old stuff you have already shot.

Other Course Assignments 

Here is a list of the typical assignments for a week and the points associated with them. Points are out of 1000 total.*

  • Lessons – A mix of video, info-graphics, and in-course text.
  • Shooting Assignments – (50-100 points Each)
  • Photo Discussions – (25 points Each)
  • Weekly Unit Quizzes – (25 Points Each)
  • Final Project/Exam - (150 Points Each)

*Orientation activities and the Final exam make up the remainder of the points. See the syllabus for more assignment and grading details once the course begins.
