Before starting today’s column, a very Happy Mothers’ Day to every mother reading this. Secondly, the area is in full graduation mode so congratulations to all those graduating from high school and college. Barton Community College’s ceremony was this past Friday up on the hill with ceremonies soon to come at Fort Riley and Fort Leavenworth. Good luck in your future endeavors.

Barton Community College will be closed Monday, May 29 for Memorial Day.
The college is now on summer hours. Office hours are 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The college will be closed on Fridays through August 4.

Corrigan Bartlett of Maize and Ezekiel Charles of Brooklyn, New York were named Barton Community College’s 2017 Outstanding Graduates. Dean of Student Services Angie Maddy introduced them and presented their awards, after which they took the opportunity to address their fellow graduates during the college’s 47th commencement ceremony Friday.

The Barton Community College Foundation honored Gary Burke with the 2017 Distinguished Service Award during Barton’s 47th commencement Friday.
The Distinguished Service Award was created in 1981 by the Barton Community College Foundation to recognize individuals who have shown genuine regard for, and have performed outstanding service to Barton Community College. The Barton Foundation Board of Directors selects the recipient from nominations received.

Barton recognizes Student Ambassadors of the Year
Barton Community College has announced its 2016-17 Brant J. Ballhorst Student Ambassador of the Year awards. Named in memory of Brant J. Ballhorst, the award recognizes two outstanding student ambassadors each year. The winners this year were Kendra Jellison of Topeka and Megan Jirak of Marion.

Barton Community College has announced the winners of its Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest. The winners are as follows: Allison Peak, Sophie Oss and Thiipong Homuen. Each winner received a $100 Great Bend Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development gift certificate.

The Barton Community College Theatre Department will host open auditions for its upcoming summer performance of “The Contrast” 4-6:30 p.m. May 17 and 18 in the Fine Arts Auditorium.
“The Contrast” is a musical based on the first American comedy of the same name written in 1787 by Royall Tyler. “The Contrast” takes a satirical look at the first Americans working to define American culture while still living and enjoying the British lifestyle.

There is a great deal happening this time of year. Classes at Barton Community College are over and it is finals and graduation week. Area schools are in the home stretch. A blizzard this past week in western Kansas hurt an already disease stressed wheat crop. Heavy rains in our area have delayed corn planting and input application. One event that likely passed under the radar was the Tractor Safety Class conducted by Barton County Extension Office.
