The Barton Theatre Program will have a new leader at the helm. Former Dean of Academics Dr. Rick Abel is now the Theatre Program Director and Instructor. Abel has a strong background and passion for the arts and theatre is an area about which he is especially passionate.

Barton Community College’s Center for Adult Education will soon be starting its nine-week GED Preparation Class. The orientation day, which is a prerequisite for the course, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on May 23 at 1025 Main St. in Great Bend.  

The class sessions are from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday from May 24 through June 16.

Barton Community College has announced the winners of its Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest.  The winners are as follows: Adreinne Danner, Natalie Espino and Fernando Rojas.  Each winner received a $50 Great Bend Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development gift certificate.

Six Barton instructors earned the Distinguished Instructor Award for the 2015-2016 school year for their efforts in the classroom.

The winners are:

Jo Harrington, Math Instructor at the Barton County campus

Crystal E. Buck, Music, Theatre and Film, German and English as a Second Language Instructor at the Fort Leavenworth campus

Callie Hansen, Psychology Instructor at the Fort Riley campus

The Barton Community College Foundation honored Loren and Gayle Unruh with the 2016 Distinguished Service Award during Barton’s 46th commencement on Friday.

The Distinguished Service Award was created in 1981 by the Barton Community College Foundation to recognize individuals who have shown genuine regard for, and have performed outstanding service to Barton Community College. The Barton Foundation Board of Directors selects the recipient from nominations received.

Audree Aguilera of Chase and Riley Chrisler of Natoma were named Barton Community College’s 2016 Outstanding Graduates.  Dean of Student Services Angie Maddy introduced them and presented their awards, after which they took the opportunity to address their fellow graduates during the college’s 46th commencement ceremony Friday.

Barton Community College has announced its 2015-16 Brant J. Ballhorst Student Ambassador of the Year awards.  Named in memory of Brant J. Ballhorst, the award recognizes two outstanding student ambassadors each year.  The winners this year were Presley Smith of Hoisington and Erik Hageman of Abilene.
