Anyone looking to join a group of creative individuals as they “explore the world of art-making and creative endeavor” are encouraged to join the Shafer Art Gallery’s League of Aesthetic Engineers as it celebrates its “Inaugural Gala” from 6-7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 in the Shafer Gallery.

Barton Community College will present a student recital of instrumental and vocal performances at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4 in the Dorothy Moses Morrison Chapel, located in the Fine Arts Building, F-157.  The recital is free.

Barton Forensics team competes at Tulsa Community College

The Barton Debate and Forensics team’s season is in full swing.  The team earned awards at a tournament at Hutchinson Community College Nov. 1-2 and a two-part debate and forensics tournament at Tulsa Community College Nov. 14-16.

Nothing gets the nostalgia pumping for the holidays like tunes inspired by the season.  Area residents can easily get their fill through various holiday music events and performances by the Barton Community College Music Department.

“These aren’t your grandmothers’ quilts,” has become an unofficial tagline for the Shafer Art Gallery’s annual exhibit from the National Quilt Museum — and for good reason.  The ornate designs and craftsmanship of the 18 quilts on display far exceed that of what most people likely think of when they hear the word “quilt.”

The Barton Community College Theatre Department will host open auditions for its spring musical production “Godspell,” by Stephen Schwartz from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 2 and 3 in the Fine Arts Auditorium.

Those auditioning need to prepare one song from musical theatre and bring sheet music.  An accompanist will be provided.

Barton Theatre Instructor Erin Renard will direct the play and anyone aged 17-40 is encouraged to audition.

Barton Community College’s music department will present the timeless holiday musical classic “A Christmas Carol” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 21 and 22 and at 2 p.m. Nov. 23 in the Fine Arts Auditorium.

The show is being directed by Barton’s Director of Chorale Activities Vern Fryberger.  He has participated in 46 musicals over a span of 35 years and has been planning this show since last summer after seeing this particular adaptation at the Denver Center for Performing Arts.

Each year, as part of the Theatre Program at Barton, students are asked to take the reins and produce a show entirely by themselves.  This year, theatre Majors Joy Conner and Maili Kee are co-directing “Love, Lust & Lasagna,” with showings at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 20 and 21 in the Barton Planetarium.

The production features two plays, “Caught in the Act” and “Opposites Attract” and both are by playwright Bruce Kane.

Brenna Martin, senior piano major at Wichita State University, will give her senior piano recital at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16 in the Dorothy Moses Morrison Chapel as part of the Barton Music Department’s Visiting Artist Series.

Martin is originally from St. John and took classes through Barton for two years in high school from Barton Piano Instructor Karole Erikson.
