The Barton Planetarium will host three free evening programs throughout September. All shows are free, family-friendly and open to everyone.  The Planetarium also has a new computerized telescope that will be used after most shows (weather permitting) to take a look at stars, planets, the moon and other sights in the night skies by Planetarium Director Dr. Tim Folkerts.

The following programs will run from 7-8 p.m. on Monday evenings:

First, the drought monitor indicated no real change over the last week. The only part of the state abnormally dry, with a small area of moderate drought is in Southwest Kansas. However, the forecast for our area is for higher than normal temperatures with minor chances of rain. With the abundance of precipitation of the last several weeks, conditions won’t change over the next week. Today, let’s catch up on a few items and events.

Barton Community College opened its doors 50 years ago in 1969, which means the 50th graduating class is now in the classrooms. The college is celebrating all year and is kicking it off with a huge open house celebration set for 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 28. An 8-page program that includes a schedule of events and a map of the various activities can be downloaded at bartonccc.edu/50.

The Barton Dance Theatre dancers will help you freshen up your ride! They will be hosting a carwash fundraiser from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Sept. 7 at Eagle Tire, 2001 10th Street in Great Bend. Funds earned will go towards defraying travel expenses to attend the Kansas Dance Festival in Wichita.

Performing Arts Dance Instructor and Coordinator Danika Bielek said Barton Dance Theatre is excited to be part of the Kansas Dance Festival, which takes place November 22 and 23 at Wichita State University.

Barton Community Colleges is calling all alumni of its vocal music group, the Hilltop Singers, to participate in a reunion and concert as part of the college’s 50th Anniversary Celebration Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Barton County Campus. Former singers and family members are invited to return to campus for a special day filled with activities for the entire family from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The proceeds from items sold, underwriters, program ads and ticket sales netted more than $40,000 at the 41st Annual Big Benefit Auction on Aug. 24, which was themed "Reflections – Through the Years." Funds raised benefit students directly through scholarships and program enhancements at Barton Community College.

Executive Director of Institutional Advancement Coleen Cape said many people come together to make the event possible and successful.

Barton Community College and the Center for Adult Education will be closed and there will be no classes in observance of Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 2.  Offices will reopen and classes will resume on Sept. 3.
