STEM

Science Technology Engineering and Math at Barton!

What is STEM?

Many people are hearing the word STEM these days, but are asking what does that mean?

S = Science

T = Technology

E = Engineering

M = Mathematics

Our world is ever changing. It is extremely important that our students are prepared to have research skills, computer skills, and problem solving skills. Since these are learned in the science, technology, engineering, and math classes; they have started calling it STEM courses.

If you have questions, would like more information, or want to get involved; please contact us at STEM@bartonccc.edu today.

STEM Activities at Barton

Barton Community College provides multiple opportunities to interact with your fellow STEM students. We have a STEM Club, eSports, Maker Labs, STEM Buddies, as well as three grant programs - NOYCE, KUS GEO, & KSU LSAMP.

Barton also conducts the Jack Kilby STEM Day every year in November for high school juniors and seniors to experience some of the ways that STEM happens throughout our life. Did you know that choreographers use math & science to create the dance moves? Did you know that ceramics is related to STEM also? These are just two of our breakout sessions. STEM is everywhere!

In addition to those activities we also have mini-STEM days throughout the year. So be sure to check out our tabs below to see what's happening around campus.

STEM Club
STEM Club

Are you creative? Do you enjoy a good challenge? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then come check out the STEM Club.

Student flying Drone at JKSTEMDaySTEM Club is an extra-curricular student activity group. The club encourages research and development through hands-on interactive learning. We promote education in the STEM fields as well as giving education majors support. STEM Club members provide community outreach opportunities through Barton's mini-STEM Day activities. All students are encouraged to bring their ideas, creativity, and curiosities as topics are driven by student interest.

We do have a Facebook group as well to discuss topics, share pictures, and announcement of meetings.

Barton's STEM Club is co-lead by Rick Sloan and Dr. Amanda Alliband.

Contact STEM@bartonccc.edu for more information.

Community Outreach
Community Outreach

Barton Community College is very interested in bringing STEM to our community and have several outreach programs.

STEM Buddies is a partnership with Ellinwood USD. For more information - please contact Charlotte Cates at catesc@bartonccc.edu

We also work with the Great Bend Rec Center to provide activities during the summer.

If you would like more information about our outreach activities - please email STEM@Bartonccc.edu

Maker Labs
Maker Labs

Barton STEM program is in the process of setting up a mobile Maker Lab and would like your input.

Please contact us with your interests and what you would like to see from us. We plan on taking this mobile lab to area schools to share our love of all things STEM with our community.

eSports and STEM
eSports and STEM

eSports and STEM can open doors for students by offering scholarships to play video games competitively while earning your degree. eSports encourages teamwork for problem solving, common scientific process, and technology know how. Many of the skills that are used in the STEM fields.

When you break down video games, you will see that they are a product of all the STEM concepts that form an interactive medium that forces gamers to actively learn new skills. In science you follow a common process when conducting experiments. First you find a problem, decide upon solutions, test those solutions, and determine if the solution was a success. eSport gamers also follow that process to figure out the best strategies for an upcoming match.

STEM Grants at Barton
STEM Grants at Barton

Robert Noyce Teacher Grant with Fort Hays State University

The Noyce Teacher-Leader program is a competitive scholarship program for students who have obtained at least junior-level status. The Noyce Teacher Leader program is more than just a scholarship - it is preparation to become an outstanding science or mathematics teacher serving in a high-needs district. Individuals selected for one of the seven $13,000 scholarships (renewable for a second year) will receive specialized coursework such as teaching using distance learning technologies, leadership, and professional development on issues facing high needs schools.

NSF grant funded scholarship in partnership with FHSU provides financial support for juniors and seniors majoring in science and mathematics fields who are pursuing a teaching career.

KS-LSAMP Grant with Kansas State University and Wichita State University

KLSAMP alliance partnersThe Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation is a National Science Foundation program that assists colleges and universities in diversifying the workforce entering STEM fields by supporting institutions’ efforts to increase the numbers of students that successfully complete baccalaureate degrees in these fields.

The Kansas Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (KS-LSAMP) promotes recruitment and retention programs throughout Kansas in support of increasing the success of underrepresented minority students (URMs) in STEM fields.

Partner institutions consisting of Kansas State University, Wichita State University and five additional Kansas community colleges were selected because they serve the rapidly growing Hispanic/Latino population of the state. These institutions will work together to implement specialized activities for students at critical junctures in their careers such as high school to college and the transition from two-year to four-year institutions.

STEM Fields and Careers
STEM Fields and Careers

Many careers in the STEM field overlap, thus they are considered a STEM job. Take Architectural Engineering, in order to design a 5 story building, they need to first understand the mathematical and scientific principles that make the building possible.

There is a large variety of opportunities for good, high paying jobs in the STEM fields with a growth that is still expanding. In 2015, there were around 9 million STEM jobs in the US. And it keeps growing. Soon the number of competent tech graduates will not meet the demand of jobs.

At Barton, we are committed to help you prepare for the STEM career you want to pursue. We have laboratory and technology facilities that give you “hand-on” learning experience. Our instructors have experiences working in their field. You can pursue Associate of Applied Science and Associate of Science degrees at Barton that will help you prepare to transfer or go directly into work.

Some careers included in the STEM fields are:

  • Architecture
