First as usual, a drought update is in order.  Again, nothing after 8 a.m. this past Tuesday is included.  Not much has changed with the western half of Kansas mostly out of drought conditions, this area in moderate drought, and the eastern half of the state, especially in the central Flint Hills in extreme and exceptional drought.  Today’s topic isn’t about red or white wine but red or white wheat.  You may have heard of white wheat but what is it and why should we plant it?

The Barton Community College Theatre Department will hold open auditions for its fall production of “Harvey” from 4-6 p.m. Aug. 20 and 21 in the Fine Arts Auditorium, or by arrangement with Theatre Director Dr. Rick Abel. Those who wish to audition can show up anytime during the allotted hours on either night. The Theatre Department will be casting all roles and all technical positions. No preparation is necessary, and all are invited to audition.

Trail’s End Lodge, a small hunting lodge at Camp Aldrich, caught fire early Friday morning.

There were no injuries. The camp was not in use at the time.

The Camp Ranger noticed the flames when he stepped outside to start his day at about 5 a.m. The Claflin Fire Department responded to the call.

Vice President of Administration Mark Dean said the cause is unknown and the Fire Marshal had not yet been on the scene as of 8:30 a.m.

Great Bend watercolorist and Barton Community College Coordinator of Workforce Training Events Krystall Barnes is a featured artist through October 21 at the Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery in Lindsborg. Her exhibition of original watercolor paintings is entitled “Emergence.”

Tickets for the Barton Foundation’s 40th Annual Big Benefit Auction, themed “Clownin’ Around," are available until Aug. 13. Tickets are $45 each or $360 per table of eight. No tickets will be sold at the door. Doors open at 6 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Great Bend Knights of Columbus with free beer and food served until 8 p.m. The live auction will begin promptly at 8 p.m.

Coleen Cape, Executive Director of Institutional Advancement, said the donated items up for grabs should be a draw this year.

The Shafer Art Gallery’s latest exhibit “Topographies: Installations by Bliven and Heimbaugh” will be on display from Aug. 10-Sept. 8 with an opening reception on Aug. 10 at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided and an artist will walk visitors through the gallery. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Admission is free.

The Shafer Art Gallery moto “where the old west meets the future” has never been more true than with the gallery’s newest exhibit.
