Barton Community College will host a “come and go” open house and reception to showcase its new Adult Healthcare Simulation Lab Feb. 2 from 2:30-4 p.m. in the Technical Building, room T-119. A presentation is scheduled at 3 p.m. to recognize the longstanding partnership with St. Rose Health Center and to thank them for equipment and supply donations.

Barton Community College will be closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 18.  Barton's Center for Adult Education and the Shafer Art Gallery also will be closed.  Offices will reopen and classes will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 19.

Barton History Instructor Linda McCaffery will teach a course via Barton’s Silver Cougar Club titled “Age of Enlightenment,” 1:30-3:30 p.m. each Tuesday from Jan. 26 through April 5 in room F-129 of the Fine Arts Building.

The class will cover the splendor and paranoia of Louis XVI, the American and French Revolutions and the dictatorship of Napoleon. During this period, Spain crumbles and England rises to status as a world power, while the fledgling American Republic struggles to survive.

The community is invited to take a look at what some of the top photographers in the area are seeing through their lenses when the Shafer Gallery hosts an opening reception for its next event, a juried photography show titled “Exposure Time,” 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15.

The Barton Community College campus at Fort Riley signed up with the Junior League of the Flint Hills for their annual holiday Adopt-A-Family program. Barton was given a family of five children ranging in age from 19 months to 17-years-old.  Each child had a wish list of things they would like to receive for Christmas. 

Administrative Assistant to the Dean at Fort Riley Arlette Stratton said she was very pleased with the participation.

Barton Community College’s Center for Adult Education will soon be starting its nine-week GED Preparation Class.

The orientation session, which is a prerequisite for the course, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Jan. 11-15 at 1025 Main St. in Great Bend. Those interested can call ahead or arrive on the first day of orientation.

Regular coursework begins on Jan. 19 and is offered from 9 a.m.–noon Monday, Tuesday and Thursday or in the evenings from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
