Barton Community College will be closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 15. Barton's Center for Adult Education and the Shafer Art Gallery also will be closed. Offices will reopen and classes will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

The nursing program at Barton Community College is accepting student applications for the 18-19 academic year until January 31. Those wishing to apply to the Barton Nursing Program should first visit apply.bartonccc.edu then stop by the Nursing Office in the Technical Building to receive an application packet for the program.

It takes a person with a certain amount of natural creativity to sign up for a metalsmithing class and wind up learning to both sew and weld. That’s the level of creative license Alyssa Bliven has embraced throughout her career in art and art education, and so far it has served her and her students well. She said she has no intention to change her approach as Barton’s newest adjunct art instructor, which will have her teaching Fiber Art and Elementary Art.

We are now officially one week into the new year. Many made resolutions to lose weight, read a book, exercise and all the typical sorts of promises for a better 2018 than 2017. Today, as we are in the middle of winter, let’s take a moment to reflect and propose resolutions for agricultural producers in 2018. Many may already be doing some or all of these. These are designed to help producers think about ways to optimize profits not minimize costs.

The Shafer Gallery will host an opening reception for its upcoming exhibit “The Search for the Sublime” at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 12 at the Shafer Gallery. “The Search for the Sublime” features landscapes created by artist Mark Flickinger. The opening reception will include refreshments and a gallery talk by the artist.

Tomorrow marks the start of a new year, a frigid start to say the least. Last week’s column reviewed some of the major stories in Kansas agriculture and agriculture in general. This week’s piece briefly discusses the possible stories for 2018. And if the last two years have taught us anything, it’s that trying to predict what is going to happen is pretty much a wild guess. So what will the major stories of 2018 be in agriculture?
