There really isn’t much to say regarding the continuing and deepening drought in our area. Although parts of Kansas did receive some snowfall, the overall pattern isn’t promising over the near term for any meaningful precipitation. Temperatures are a bit up and down but fortunately more on the cooler rather than warmer side through the coming weekend. Today, let’s discuss a different drought affecting the agriculture industry – a drought in the workforce.

Five students from Barton Community College in the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society were recognized as members of the PTK All-Kansas Academic Team during an award luncheon Thursday at the Ramada Inn in Topeka. Prior to the luncheon, inductees toured the state capital building with Barton administrators and instructors and visited with state legislators.

The nursing program at Barton Community College has announced a secondary deadline accepting student applications for the 18-19 academic year until March 1. Those who applied during the first round of applications will receive priority status. Additional applicants from the secondary deadline will fill seats as available for both the Practical Nursing Certificate and the Associates in Applied Science Degree in Nursing.

The transition to civilian life can be a drastic and stressful adjustment for Soldiers, but when Sgt. 1st Class Craig Jacobs walks into a Barton Community College classroom at the college’s Grandview Plaza Campus, he brings with him an air of lightheartedness, despite his looming last-day in the military of April 30.
He credits the attitudes of the faculty and staff at the college’s satellite location for creating an atmosphere of belonging.

Barton freshman Dorian Lueth will participate in the Kansas Intercollegiate Orchestra during the 2018 Kansas Music Educators Association state convention February 22-24 in Wichita. He will be the only community college student performing in the 72-piece orchestra comprised of students from 11 colleges and universities throughout Kansas. Lueth plays bass guitar in Barton’s Pep Band and Jazz Band, double bass in the Prairie Winds Concert Band and viola in the Barton Community College Orchestra.
