Susanne Yarmer and her son, Justin White, did not expect to walk across the stage to accept their associate degrees on the same day, but their lives took a few turns and they celebrated the milestone together at Barton Community College on May 11.

Yarmer initially began her college education at Barton right after high school, as many do, but transitioned from the role of student to mother and put her education on the backburner.

Barton Community College’s Center for Adult Education will soon begin its nine-week GED Preparation Class. Students must attend all orientation classes May 21-24, and the first day of class May 29. Failure to attend all five days will result in removal of the student from the program. The center is located at 1025 Main St. in Great Bend.

There is a one-time $65 fee for materials. Once students have completed the preparation courses, they will be able to take the official GED test. The cost to take the GED test is $132.

First, more beneficial rainfall this week to go along with last week.  Did the Drought Monitor reflect much change (remember this is as of Tuesday morning)?  Well, the area of exceptional drought retreated somewhat southwest as did the extreme and severe drought areas.  Or in plain English, things are “less bad” then they were allowing wheat to keep going and providing some optimism for corn/soybean producers.  And there are rain chances for several days this week so keep your fingers crossed.
