For people who have ever thought about picking up carpentry or woodworking as a hobby or for those who are just wanting to enhance their existing skillset, Barton Community College is offering woodworking courses from 6 to 9:45 p.m. on Mondays from Nov. 3 to Feb. 23 at Ellsworth High School, 211 W. 11th St. in Ellsworth.

Barton Community College will offer citizenship classes from 10 a.m. to noon and a night class session from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Nov. 4 through Jan. 29 at the Center for Adult Education 1025 Main St., Great Bend in room 208.

The Barton Community College Library will hold an art contest to determine the artwork for seven Cohen Center for Kansas History (CCKH) trivia pamphlets.  Submissions can be done in any medium and must be postmarked by Nov. 10.  Contest is open to all students, Barton employees and community members.  Multiple entries are accepted.

Barton Community College’s Center for Adult Education will soon be starting its 9-week GED Preparation Class.

The orientation session, which is a prerequisite for the course, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Oct. 13-17 at 1025 Main St. in Great Bend. Those interested can call ahead or arrive on the first day of orientation.

The Barton Debate and Forensics team performed well in its first tournament of the year at the “Debates on a Plain” tournament at Hutchinson Community College September 26-28.

Sophomore Chase Pumford of Great Bend tied for third place in International Public Debate Association (IDPA) Debate and placed third out of 21 speakers in National Forensic Association Lincoln Douglas (NFA-LD) Debate. 

Freshman Rachel Schloctermeier of Ellinwood placed fourth out of 21 in NFA-LD Debate.

The Barton Visual and Performing Arts Department will host its annual Sneak Preview Concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6 in the Fine Arts Auditorium.

The event will feature performances by the Hilltop Singers, Concert Choir, Jazz Band and Prairie Winds Concert Band.

Local artists Michael Whelan and Robert Joy will grace the gallery with their unorthodox pieces at the opening reception for the “Crossing the Line” exhibit from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5 in the Shafer Art Gallery, which will feature a live performance from the band Johnnie Booth and the Head Wounds of Lawrence.

Barton sophomore theatre major Joy Conner used to be shy.  Thanks to her involvement with theatre, her shyness is a thing of the past.  She’ll be portraying the role of Truvy Jones in the Barton Theatre production of “Steel Magnolias,” a role made famous by Dolly Parton in the Hollywood movie.  Barton Theatre will present the play at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 25-27 in the Fine Arts Auditorium.
