Part I

Today’s column is in the form of a two-part story. Hopefully it will demonstrate the danger in not thinking long-term and trying to identify the unintended consequences when making farming decisions.  Before we start, the goal here is not to identify villains, or heroes for that matter, but the need for everyone involved in agriculture to try and think in the very long-term and critically evaluate information.  And for those of us past a certain age, this is the Readers’ Digest version.

Tickets for the Barton Foundation’s 39th Annual Big Benefit Auction themed “Under the Sea” on Aug. 26 are available until Aug. 14. Tickets are $45 each or $360 per table of eight. Only 200 tickets are available. Doors open at 6 p.m. at the Great Bend Columbus Club with bidding on the silent auction and complimentary beer available until 8 p.m. Dinner is served at 7 p.m. and the live auction will begin promptly at 8 p.m. Guests must be 21 or older to attend.

Barton Theatre holding open auditions for fall production “Ah Wilderness!”

The Barton Community College Theatre Department will hold open auditions for its fall production “Ah Wilderness!” from 4-7 p.m. Aug. 23 and 24 in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Those wanting to audition can show up anytime during the allotted hours on either night. The Theatre Department will be casting all roles and all technical positions. No preparation is necessary and all are invited to audition.

The Shafer Gallery will host an opening reception for its upcoming exhibit “ZWEYGARDT” from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Shafer Gallery. “ZWEYGARDT” features sculptures created from various materials by Kansas native Glenn Zweygardt. The reception will feature refreshments and a gallery talk by Shafer Gallery Director Dave Barnes.
