Barton Community College has published its annual Report to the Community, which highlights the college’s progress toward meeting the mission set by the elected Board of Trustees.

Among the highlights from the 2019-2020 academic year include a total of more than 13,000 students served, 13 years with no tax increases, a return on investment of almost $3 for every Barton County tax dollar and a positive outlook as the college looks to 2021 after navigating many challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Barton Community College Instrumental Music Department will present its annual fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 12. The concert will feature iconic instrumental music from across multiple decades!

Barton Community College will host a Student Recital at 4 p.m. Nov. 11.

The Drought Monitor shows all of Kansas at least abnormally dry with the area of moderate drought creeping eastward towards us.  And there is a bullseye of moderate drought encompassing an area centered around Wichita.  Also, a substantial area of Southeast Kansas is up to moderate drought. Again, the wheat needs moisture and there is at least a promise of some but as of the day this column was written, how much is unknown.  However, this has allowed for a fairly rapid harvest.

Barton Community College’s Center for Adult Education will soon begin another nine-week GED Preparation Class. However, orientation sessions are required before starting the class.

Multiple delivery types are available for students to select for orientation.  Students can choose between LiveOnline, Fuzion or face-to-face sessions.  LiveOnline sessions will meet exclusively via Zoom. Fuzion sessions will feature a combination of face-to-face students and Zoom students.

Most students who take classes at Barton Community College at Fort Riley learn about the institution’s unique offerings tailored to Soldiers’ lifestyles after transferring to the post. Melissa and Justin Johnson, however, chose Fort Riley in 2018 out of three options specifically because of Barton’s day and night classes, which are offered on scholarship to Soldiers, their spouses and dependents in seven six-week cycles.

Barton Community College has announced its fall 2020 Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society initiates.

PTK is the international honor society for two-year colleges and symbolizes excellence in higher education.  Students with a GPA of 3.5 or higher are invited to join PTK. The PTK group at Barton spends significant time sponsoring local events as well as volunteering to support others’ events.

Barton Community College will host a blood drive from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30 in the Technical Building in room T-186, the Case New Holland Training area. Social distancing guidelines will be followed and masks will be required.
