Some quilts aren’t made for warmth. Some of them are meant to be stared at in awe and wonderment. These are the types of quilts on display in the National Quilt Museum’s Exhibit that opened Friday in the Shafer Art Gallery.   

The annual traveling show’s title this year is “New Quilts from an Old Favorite 2015: Nine Patch.” The exhibit will be up through Dec. 13.  The Shafer Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Admission is free.

Barton Community College has been designated a 2016 military friendly school by Victory Media, a “veteran-owned small business that connects classrooms to careers for the nation’s next generation of professionals,” according to a news release from the organization.

The designation requires institutions to submit data and information via extensive surveys to qualify.

Fall Weather

Speak with many older farmers and almost all of them mention how unusual this fall’s weather has been.  Since this is Kansas, most of us consider unusual weather usual, however, this year’s fall weather has been extreme so far.  How extreme has it been and potentially mean for crop and livestock producers?

The Barton Community College Library will host a “Game Night” from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, which will include a “Minute to Win It” portion that will start at 6:30. The event is free and is open to all.  Refreshments will be served and all participants will be entered in a drawing for a chance to win a “dorm food” prize bag.

Games include: Apples to Apples, Battleship, Buzzword, Twister, Monopoly and more.

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees gathered Tuesday evening for its regular meeting and discussed one of its nine overarching goals, known as ENDs, one of which is “Barton Experience.”

Barton Community College will continue its Kansas History Snapshot series, by featuring “Buffalo Soldiers: An American Legend on the Western Frontier,” a presentation by Fort Larned National Historic Site Park Ranger Celeste Dixon, at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12 in the Library.  Catered refreshments will be served.

Barton Community College is offering woodworking courses from 6 to 9:45 p.m. on Mondays from Nov. 2 to Feb. 22 at Ellsworth High School, 211 W. 11th St. in Ellsworth.

The instructor will be David Weeks.  Classes of various levels will be available including Woodworking I (18928), Woodworking II (18930) and the chance to take a class focusing entirely on Individual Woodworking Projects (18931).  Each course will count for three credit-hours.  The cost is $300 per class and materials fees are dependent on materials used.

Artists at Barton Community College showcased their talents at the annual Russell Original Art Review Exhibition at the Russell 4-H Building.  The show ran through Oct. 18 and several Barton students received awards.
