Barton Community College will host its eighth annual Sidewalk Art Contest May 4-6 on the sidewalk outside the Shafer Art Gallery.

The contest is open to all residents of Barton County.  Artists wishing to participate need to register and pick up their free chalk at the Shafer Gallery between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on any of the three days.  Artists must have their work completed by 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 6.

The Barton Community College Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23 in the Shafer Art Gallery.

The 24-piece orchestra is comprised of high school, college and adult members of the Barton and Pawnee county areas.

The Golden Belt Community Foundation awarded Central Kansas Upward Bound a $500 grant to bring recycling to the Barton Community College campus

"It's nice that Barton now has the option for recycling and the individual cans makes it a lot easier," Barton student LiErin McCune-streit said. "It's good for the earth, and this is the only one we have."

Barton Community College art students will line the walls of the Shafer Art Gallery with their work during the “Barton Student Art Exhibit” juried art show from April 13 through May 2.  The reception will be Friday, April 17 from 6-8 p.m.

Shafer Art Gallery Director Dave Barnes said the student exhibit is an important part of encouraging young artists.

Barton Community College will be closed on Friday, April 3 and Monday, April 6 for Easter break. Barton's Center for Adult Education and Shafer Art Gallery will also be closed. The college's regular class schedule and office hours will resume Tuesday, April 7.

Barton Community College will present a student recital of instrumental and vocal performances at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 9 in the Dorothy Moses Morrison Chapel, located in the Fine Arts Building, F-157.  The recital is free.
